A proud Mi'kmaq community on Chapel Island, honouring our traditions and embracing our future
Mi'kmaq Identity: Potlotek First Nation, known in Mi'kmaq as "Potlotek" meaning the place where people cross, is a vibrant Mi'kmaq community located on Chapel Island (Mniku) in the Bras d'Or Lake region of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Chapel Island is also the site of a National Historic Site of Canada.
Population: Potlotek has approximately 500 registered members, with a close-knit on-reserve community that maintains strong cultural and spiritual traditions.
Location: Situated on Chapel Island in Richmond County, Nova Scotia, surrounded by the beautiful Bras d'Or Lake — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — our traditional territory reflects the deep Mi'kmaq connection to water, land, and nature.
Culture & Heritage: Potlotek is home to the annual St. Anne's Mission, one of the most significant spiritual and cultural gatherings for Mi'kmaq people across Atlantic Canada, held each July at Chapel Island.
